Rome Guided Tour: Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps, and Trevi Fountain
This guided tour of a charming corner of the Eternal City takes you through some of Rome’s most iconic squares, streets, and monuments, blending art, history, and modern life.
Please note: this is an outdoor walking tour. The experience focuses on external views of monuments, squares, and streets, and no entrances to churches or museums are included.
Piazza del Popolo and Santa Maria del Popolo
The tour begins in Piazza del Popolo, one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Rome. The square features a central obelisk, elegant monumental fountains, and can be admired from the nearby Pincio terrace for panoramic views of the Eternal City.
Overlooking the square is the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, dating back to the 15th century. From the outside, you can admire this historic church, which houses extraordinary masterpieces such as the Chigi Chapel designed by Raphael and executed by Bernini, and the Cerasi Chapel, home to two famous paintings by Caravaggio.
Via del Corso and Sweet Break at Pompi
We continue along Via del Corso, famous for its shopping streets, until we reach Pompi, the kingdom of tiramisu. Here, visitors can enjoy a sweet break, tasting the classic tiramisu and its many creative variations.
Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps
A few steps away is the iconic Piazza di Spagna, often featured in film sets. The square is dominated by the enchanting Trinità dei Monti staircase, the most famous staircase in Rome, offering a postcard-perfect view.
At the foot of the steps stands the elegant Fontana della Barcaccia, and you may also encounter the famous Roman horse carriages.
Via Condotti and Luxury Shopping
The tour continues along Via Condotti, Rome’s most prestigious shopping street. Here, Italy’s top fashion brands showcase their colorful and sparkling window displays, attracting visitors from around the world.
Government Buildings: Palazzo Montecitorio and Palazzo Chigi
Next, we visit Rome’s important government buildings from the outside. Palazzo Montecitorio, designed by Bernini and later modified in Art Nouveau style, serves as the seat of the Chamber of Deputies and the Italian Parliament in joint session.
Nearby stands Palazzo Chigi, the residence of the Prime Minister and the seat of the Italian Government. Historically, the palace housed some of Rome’s most important noble families, and Mozart even stayed here during his travels.
Alberto Sordi Gallery and the Trevi Fountain
The guided tour concludes by walking through the elegant Alberto Sordi Gallery, a stylish shopping passage that leads to the Trevi Fountain.
The Trevi Fountain, the most famous fountain in Rome, is a masterpiece of 18th-century sculpture and design. Visitors often follow the tradition of tossing a coin into the fountain to ensure a return to the Eternal City. The fountain also became famous worldwide thanks to Federico Fellini’s film La Dolce Vita, in which Anita Ekberg, dressed in a flowing black gown, wades into the fountain, inviting Marcello Mastroianni to join her.
