Experience the history, culture, and flavors of Matera in this private guided tour through the Sassi, ending with a traditional local sandwich tasting.
The itinerary begins at Piazza Vittorio Veneto, offering a stunning view of Sasso Caveoso and the Murgia hill. You will pass by Palazzo Lanfranchi, home to the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata, and the nearby Church of the Carmine.
The tour continues through the heart of the old town to the Church of San Pietro Caveoso. You will also pass near the Cave Church of Saint Lucia delle Malve and continue toward Sasso Barisano, following the path of the ancient ravine.
Returning to the town center, the tour explores the baroque area, visiting the most important churches in this style: St. Clare and St. Francesco di Assisi. The tour concludes with the discovery of the Romanesque Cathedral.
Along the way, you will have the chance to taste a traditional Matera sandwich, prepared with Matera semolina bread and your choice of local toppings, including preserved vegetables, pickled delicacies, artisanal cheeses, and cured meats from the region. Your tasting also includes a drink of your choice: water, soft drink, beer, or a glass of wine—perfect to enjoy the authentic flavors of Matera.
Additionally, you can visit a typical “Casa Grotta” (Cave House), excavated into the rock and furnished to reflect rural life at the beginning of the 1900s.
