Guided Tour of Mantua (Mantova): Explore the Heart of the Italian Renaissance
The guided tour of Mantua (Mantova) is a walk through the heart of the Italian Renaissance, exploring the most characteristic places of the historic center of this Lombard town, embraced on three sides by the waters of the Mincio River.
Palazzo Ducale and Castle of San Giorgio
We begin the tour with an external visit to the imposing Palazzo Ducale, the palace of the Gonzaga family who ruled Mantua for centuries. This grand monumental complex contains the Castle of San Giorgio, the Palazzo del Capitano, and the Corte Vecchia. The castle, formed by four corner towers, initially had defensive purposes but later became an elegant residence adorned with beautiful frescoes by Mantegna.
Rigoletto House and Mantua Cathedral
Not far away, admire the House of Rigoletto with the bronze statue of the court minstrel made famous by the opera of Giuseppe Verdi. Next, visit the Mantua Cathedral dedicated to St. Peter, housing the tombs of important Gonzaga family members and featuring a stunning Carrara marble façade. Inside, admire amazing paintings by Renaissance artists and the Via Crucis in clay.
Piazza delle Erbe and Historic Monuments
Walking through the streets of the historic center, arrive at Piazza delle Erbe, one of Mantua’s oldest and most picturesque squares. The square still hosts a fruit and vegetable market, while its Gothic and Renaissance arcades host shops, bars, and restaurants. Notable monuments here include:
- Rotonda di San Lorenzo, the oldest medieval church with round architecture inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem.
- Palazzo della Ragione, the historic seat of administrative power.
- House of Merchant, with its original oriental-style façade and historical shop objects.
- Clock Tower with its astronomical clock marking hours, lunar days, stars, and zodiac signs.
Church of Sant’Andrea
The tour continues to the Church of Sant’Andrea, the largest Renaissance-style church in Mantua, preserving the Sacred Vases, a unique relic said to contain earth mixed with the blood of Christ. The interior is rich in decorations and frescoes by Correggio and Mantegna, who is also buried here.
Loggia delle Pescherie
The guided tour concludes at the Loggia delle Pescherie, built in the 16th century by Giulio Romano. This evocative corner is perfect for photos, as in the past it was where fish caught in the Po River arrived and were sold at the nearby market.
