Macerata Guided Tour: Discover the Historic Center
The guided tour of Macerata offers an immersive journey through the historic center of a town rich in artistic and cultural treasures. The visit begins at the symbolic monument of the city, the Sferisterio, a unique semicircular theater built in the 19th century in neoclassical style. Characterized by a striking sequence of arches and columns, a high wall, and a central stage, the Sferisterio originally hosted public sporting events and today is renowned for its extraordinary acoustics, hosting opera performances, jazz concerts, and a wide variety of cultural events.
The Religious and Artistic Heart of Macerata
From the Sferisterio, we move into the heart of Macerata to visit its most important church, the Cathedral of San Giuliano, notable for its unfinished façade and Gothic-style bell tower. Inside, visitors can admire exquisite frescoes and a magnificent 18th-century pipe organ. Just a few steps away stands the Church of Mercy, rebuilt in the 1700s following a design by the architect Vanvitelli, who also designed the Royal Palace of Caserta. The church features a Baroque-Rococo interior with stunning paintings, stucco decorations, and delicate pink marble.
Historic Palaces and Cultural Landmarks
The tour continues with an exterior visit to the University of Macerata, founded at the end of the 13th century and among the oldest universities in the world, and the elegant Palazzo Buonaccorsi, an 18th-century palace housing the Civic Museums. Walking through the charming streets of the historic center, lined with shops and taverns serving traditional Marche cuisine, we encounter the Lauro Rossi Theater, dedicated to the Macerata-born composer and orchestra conductor. This exquisite 18th-century theater hosts annual musical and theatrical performances in a setting of refined architecture and historical charm.
Piazza della Libertà and the Town’s Iconic Squares
The tour then reaches Piazza della Libertà, the main square of Macerata, dominated by the 16th-century Civic Tower, standing 64 meters high and featuring the ancient astronomical clock. This large blue dial indicates the hours, the phases of the moon, and the carousel of the Magi in adoration of the Virgin and Child, with an ingenious mechanical system of automata reminiscent of Venice. The square also hosts the Town Hall with its elegant neoclassical façade and the Loggia dei Mercanti, commissioned in the 16th century by the future Pope Paul II, where arches once housed merchants and their shops. This lively and historically rich square marks the perfect conclusion to the guided tour of Macerata.
