Guided Tour of Cremona: Explore the Historic City Center
The Cremona guided tour takes you through the historic city center, where the most important monuments are located. Wander the narrow medieval streets and reach the beautiful Piazza del Comune, the heart of the city, surrounded by historic civil and religious buildings.
Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
The tour begins at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, known for its striking façade of white Carrara and red Verona marble, a large rose window, two-story loggia, and guardian lions at the columns. Inside, the soaring ceiling and exquisite frescoes earned it the nickname “Sistine Chapel of the Po Valley.”
Torrazzo of Cremona
Next to the Cathedral stands the Torrazzo, the tallest bell tower in Europe at 112 meters. Built entirely of brick, it is a symbol of Cremona, featuring a large astronomical clock and a golden sphere at the top. The tower houses relics of the True Cross and other sacred artifacts.
Baptistery and Medieval Town Hall
The tour continues with an exterior visit to the octagonal Baptistery from the 1100s and the medieval Town Hall, in use for over 800 years. Explore the Hall of Paintings and the Consulta Room for panoramic views of the Cathedral and Torrazzo. Before leaving the square, stop at the historic Loggia dei Militi.
Traditional Sweets and Cremona Violin Workshops
Walk through streets filled with historic pastry shops like Sperlari and Vergani, birthplace of the famous Cremonese nougat, chocolate, jams, and traditional local mostarda. Discover approximately 150 violin-making workshops, where violins, string instruments, and bows are still handcrafted today.
Church of Sant’Agostino and Stradivari House
The tour concludes at the Church of Sant’Agostino, built in Lombard Gothic style and remodeled in the 1500s, featuring beautiful altarpieces and marble statues. A short walk away is the house of Antonio Stradivari, the renowned 17th-century luthier, honored with a statue in front of his home. Stradivari’s violins are world-famous for their unique sound, making Cremona a global center of violin-making.
